NYT grueling over Bush-Kerry matchup

Here’s NYT.com’s front page from a few minutes ago:

NYT front - Grueling race begins

Now, my question is, how can the race be grueling if it just began today? Grueling means laborious, drawn out, or exhausting. And while you can predict that the race is, eventually, going to be long, difficult, and draining, I don’t think that’s the right way to characterize it right now.

If the Bush-Kerry race is grueling after only a few hours, imagine what it’ll be like in October.
